About six gunmen yesterday invaded
Paul University, Awka, Anambra State,
raping two female students at gun
point.
The invasion infuriated other
students of the institution who
barricaded the three gates leading
into the university for several hours
to protest what they termed
insecurity on the campus.
It took the intervention of the Vice
Chancellor, Prof. Gaius Igboeli, and
the Anglican Bishop of Awka, the Rt.
Rev. Alex Ibezimhe, to stop the
protest.
The VC had spent about 45 minutes
persuading the students to let him
into the campus.
He was followed by Bishop Ibezim
who addressed the students.
The situation almost got out of hand
when the students dared the police
and insisted that no one would be
allowed entry into the campus.
Sources said the gunmen stormed
the university at about 1:45 am,
seized a double barrel gun from one
of te varsity's security men, Godwin
Orji and then attacked him with a
broken bottle.
"The gunmen did not steal anything.
They stole one double barrel gun
belonging to one of our security
men who they injured with broken
bottles. They just came and dragged
the two girls into a nearby bush and
raped them," one source said.
"The rapists came with one AK 47,
three Pump Action guns and other
dangerous weapons but they didn't
steal anything, only a double barrel
gun."
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of
the university, Ikechukwu Abana,
could not be reached for comment
on the development.
Only last Wednesday, robbers broke
into Bishop Ibezim's office and made
away with over N6 million.
Last year alone, the university
campus was thrice invaded by
robbers.
Meanwhile, a motorcycle operator in
Nnewi has been hit and killed by a
bus driver who was evading arrest
by officials of the Anambra State
Traffic Agency Team (ASTA).
The victim was rushed to the
hospital where he died.
The bus has been impounded by the
police.
The Police Public Relations Officer
Emeka Chukwuemeka did not pick
the calls made to his mobile phone
at press time.
